Our very own Mr Scott Mason was the coach of the ‘Wolves’ who have recently won the Victorian State Futsal Championship under-8 competition.

THEY only came together a few weeks ago – now the Wolves are state champions.
The group of friends that mostly first started out playing futsal together at St Columbas Primary School a few years back came out victors in the Victorian State Futsal Championship under-8 competition at the weekend.
The team has somewhat changed over the years, culminating in the victorious Wolves sides that can now claim it is the best in Victoria.

The team of seven went into the tournament, held at the Ballarat Futsal Centre, as massive underdogs.
Coming up against sides with far more experience under their belt, the Wolves ended up taking out the grand final against Melbourne-based academy side RM Strikers in golden goal extra time, completing the fairytale story.

Coach Scott Mason said the heart and determination shown by his side ended up trumping the apparent skill from other sides. “These boys only just started playing together recently, we only really train together once a fortnight or once a month,” he said.

“A lot of the other teams in the tournament seemed a lot more prepared than our boys. But we played with heart for each other and played as a team and that won out in the end.”

The Australian Futsal Association Victorian state titles featured under-8s, under-10s and under-12s competitions, with the Ballarat RC also finishing runner-up in the under-10s.

Ballarat Futsal Centre manager Corey Smith said the tournament ran perfectly and would be complimented by more state titles in little more than a week’s time.

The futsal centre will hold the under-14s and under-16s state titles on October 25, featuring almost 20 teams.
With around 50 teams entered all together across the weeks, Smith said the event continued to grow.
“It means there are almost 500 kids and their families coming to Ballarat to play, it’s a pretty big event for us,” he said. “The Ballarat sides have always been pretty successful in the underage groups.
“We’ve got a good program set up now and it’s starting to shine through in a these sort of these sort of tournaments.”

Well done to Scott and his son on their success!
